TMJ Disorders
If you’re experiencing jaw pain, you may have what’s known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ. Our gentle and friendly dentist offers a complete evaluation as well as comprehensive TMJ exams to develop the best treatment plan for you based on your needs.

What Is TMJ?
Also known as TMD syndrome, TMJ is a disorder of the jaw muscles. People who experience this common condition have severe pain and discomfort in the temporomandibular joint. Patients with TMJ have issues that prevent the complex system of the joints, bones, and muscles from working together properly.
Common symptoms of TMJ include:
- Jaw locking
- Limited movement of the jaw
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening the mouth
- Pain in the face, neck, or shoulders
Common Causes Of TMJ
Patients can experience TMJ symptoms for various reasons. Depending on the cause, there are treatments available to correct the issue. Some of the common reasons people may experience TMJ include:
- Stress
- Injury or trauma
- Arthritis in the jaw
- Malocclusion
How Can We Treat TMJ?
Our dental practice has an extensive referral network that includes massage therapists and TMJ physical therapists to help patients manage their TMJ symptoms. We also offer several other treatment options, including occlusal guards, for those who grind or clench their teeth, and laser therapy. These devices protect your teeth and jaw from the harmful effects of clenching and grinding, minimizing TMJ symptoms.
